THE BIGGEST EVENT OF THE YEAR: CICT DAYS

Description of the Project

For the longest time, no college in Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) Main Campus has held any College Days concept of activity. The “College Days” concept of activity has been one of the much-awaited student events in other universities. Usually, College Days consists of variety of extra- and co-curricular activities, boosting students participation, enhancing academic competitiveness among students, showcase talents, and unify the whole college towards the attainment of college spirit.
            However, it has been observed in the Main Campus the apparent apathy of students regarding participation in activities. During the recent visit of accreditors in the university, one of the most highly recommended area for improvement is on students’ activities and involvement, probably trying to tell BPSU that students should be given more opportunities for college experience, which ultimately leads to a more holistic learning.
            With this apparent need to boost students involvement and participation, as well as in compliance with the basic requirements of accreditation in terms of student support, the College of Information and Communications Technology – College Student Council (CICT-CoSC) conducted the CICT Days (College Days) last December 14 and 15, 2009 in various venues in and off campus, where students academic, technical, social, artistic and literary talents were highlighted for the first time. To substantiate the pioneering event, series of ICT-related seminars were held. Likewise, forums and other intellectually-stimulating activities were also conducted.

Objectives

Given the importance of making students get involve and participate in college activities, it is important that objectives be set so as to give focus and direction in the activity.

To assess the extent to which the proposed project remedies the problems noted above, it will be necessary to quantify the results to measure the project’s effectiveness. The following are the project objectives:

a.      To encourage academic competitiveness among students through the conduct of academic quiz shows and technical contests in various ICT areas;
b.      To complement students’ classroom learning through the conduct of series of ICT-related seminars and workshops;
c.       To foster unity, camaraderie, and friendship amongst the faculty and students of the College of Information and Communications Technology;
d.      To encourage artistic and literary skills among students through the conduct of college level literary contests; and
e.      To elevate involvement among students through the conduct of teambuilding activities and a social event.

The CICT Days is a pioneering multi-event college activity conceptualized by the CICT College Student Council  Officers and Advisers (2009-2010) to empower and involve students through series of seminars, fora, academic and technical contests, as well as leadership trainings and life coaching.

The preparations for the big event were done by the council weeks before the actual event. Stage preparations and paper works were conceptualized, designed, and executed by the officers themselves.

The CICT Faculty members are critical players in the success of the CICT College Days. Meetings and consultations were conducted among faculty members for suggestions and modifications of the event. The Faculty members and the dean actively supported and got involved in the project as contest facilitators, hosts, and judges in various technical and academic competitions.

The YOUTube concept design of the CICT Days main stage for the two-day event signifies the college’s dedication to computer science and information technology. The concept amplifies the CoSC’s aim of imposing innovation and creativity among the students of the foremost IT institution of the university, the College of Information and Communications Technology.

During the Kick-off activity of the two-day college event at the Sari-Gamit Covered Court, where CICT students congregated to witness the first-ever event, messages of congratulations and encouragement were delivered amidst CICT students, feeling prouder of being BPSU students in general, and CICT students in particular.
